There are lots of talks about preparing your boat for offshore sailing but it is equally important to prepare yourself for the adventure. Mia will cover various tips from her own experience as a cruiser and from friends who are out there. The talk will focus on what it’s really like out there on the ‘high seas’, how to best communicate with the loved ones back home and take care of your snail mail, staying active and fit while cruising, provisioning and eating in foreign places and much more…in short, it’s about “things I wish I would have known before starting the adventure…”
Mia Karlsson & her husband Andy Schell own & operate the classic Swan 48 ‘Isbjorn’ - that’s Swedish for ‘Polar Bear’ - offering folks the opportunity to crew on long-distance ocean passages around the world, including passages in the Arctic, the Canadian Maritimes, Caribbean, trans-Atlantic, South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand & beyond, through their business 59 North, Ltd.
Mia grew up in the countryside of Sweden and started sailing in her early 20s when she met Andy in New Zealand. They bought their first boat in 2008 and she has come a long way since then. She just completed her 4th Atlantic Crossing this summer and has over 30 000 Bluewater miles under her belt. Together they produce the popular ‘On the Wind’ sailing podcast, where he interviews sailors from around the world.
